The charge
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the charge on Friday, August 7. Court papers show the charge was filed on July 31.
The alleged assault took place on Wardour Street, in the heart of Soho's nightlife district. Toney was arrested at the scene in December. He was later released on bail while the investigation continued.
Assault causing actual bodily harm covers injuries that go beyond something minor. The charge is not a conviction. The case has not yet been heard in court.
A spokesperson for Toney said: "Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court."
Background
Toney left Brentford for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli in 2024. He scored 67 goals in 128 appearances for the Bees, becoming one of the Premier League's most talked-about forwards along the way.
He remained part of England's plans despite the move abroad. This summer he travelled to the World Cup with Thomas Tuchel's squad. His main involvement came in the third-place play-off against France, which England won 6-4 in Miami. He also came on as a late substitute in the semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The Soho incident happened weeks after that tournament, during a trip back to London.
What happens next
Toney's case now moves toward its first court hearing. He will enter the courtroom at Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 24. That date is significant for England as well. Two days later, on September 26, the national team face World Cup winners Spain in a Nations League fixture at Wembley.
Whether Toney is involved in that squad remains to be seen. Gareth Southgate's successor Tuchel has not yet commented on the charge or its effect on selection.
Toney continues to train and play for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia in the meantime. His legal team will now prepare for the September hearing, where he is expected to enter a plea.
