Real Madrid complete £120m deal for Yan Diomande

Madrid's opening bid of £85.4m (€100m) was turned down by Leipzig, who held out for a higher fee. The Spanish club returned with an improved offer that got the deal over the line.
Jose Mourinho's side beat strong competition to land the winger. PSG, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City had all been credited with interest during the summer.
Diomande is the latest in a run of big-money arrivals at the Bernabéu. Madrid have also signed Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella so far this window.
From Leganés reject to record fee
Diomande's rise has been rapid. This time last year, his senior career amounted to six substitute and starting appearances for Leganés, who were relegated from LaLiga.
He scored twice in those six games, against Espanyol and Valladolid. Even so, it was enough to persuade RB Leipzig to sign him for around €20m in the summer of 2025.
The move to Germany transformed his career. Diomande scored 13 goals and set up 10 more in 36 appearances in all competitions, as Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga. He was named the division's Rookie of the Season.
His form also caught the eye at international level. Diomande created 11 chances in four appearances for Ivory Coast at the World Cup, before they were knocked out in the round of 32 by Norway.
What happens next
Diomande travelled to Spain to complete a medical before the transfer was confirmed. He will now begin pre-season training with his new teammates as Mourinho builds his squad for the campaign ahead.
Real Madrid are targeting a return to the top of LaLiga under Mourinho, having gone two seasons without a major trophy.

Diomande thanked Leipzig supporters after the move was confirmed. "When I came to Leipzig a year ago, many of you didn't know who I was, but the club trusted me from day one and gave me a chance to prove myself at this level," he said.
Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, paid tribute to the player's impact. "From day one, Yan impressed us with his fearless approach, his willingness to learn and the courage he showed on the pitch," he said. "In next to no time, his pace, dribbling ability and eye for goal saw him establish himself at the highest level."
